It's amazing what you can do in the mastering process to enhance the sound and correct deficiencies in the mix. But sometimes I'm with a client in the studio and we come across something that just can't be fixed in the mastering.
It may be a vocal that's buried too far in the mix, or perhaps an over-enthusiastic use of reverb - whatever, I have to tell the client that it's a remix job.
Sometimes the client will say that a remix is out of the question, maybe due to budget considerations or because the multitrack version is no longer available. So we have to just go with it and do the best we can. But often they have the opportunity to remix, so we carry on with the session and arrange to slot in the remixed track(s) later. But that means delay to the project, disruption to the session, and extra time and expense later.
So wouldn't it be better to find these things out BEFORE you start the session?
